If there’s something out there in life that you really really want - It’s become so hard to say yes first - and only figure things out later. We’re so afraid of uncertainty and discomfort these days but the truth is, if we’ve got no skin in the game, if we already know something's going to work, if it needs no courage, no leap of faith, it probably also won’t matter. When we are young and basically a blank slate, it’s easy to just let life “happen to us”. Setting healthy boundaries & living for ourselves isn’t about privileging the self. It’s about giving our own needs equal weight, considering them alongside the needs of others, and finding a sensible compromise when in conflict - or, sometimes, even just standing firm. 📍 Shot in Bali, Indonesia where we l...

    The meaning of life is not the same for all; it is a personal journey. I was a degreed successful Biomedical Engineer in the US after struggling out of the gutter and serving my nation honorably in the military. I went on a much-needed vacation in 2015 instead of signing another employment contract - and never went back. I am soooooo happy that I gave up the US "dream" nightmare. I have traveled many places, and have resided in 3 different SE Asian countries for pennies on the dollar that anyone in the US pays for a much lesser life.

    I currently make 60K and could certainly apply for a managerial position now that my on site boss is leaving. Some of my coworkers have been kind of poking me to try to apply for it but I am hesitant. Having his job entails having to occasionally travel by plane to other sister sites to help manage and work on other projects. You will eventually become homesick after a while of doing that unless you really like travelling. But even if it pays 100K+, I still don’t want it. As lucrative as some jobs might sound, it must also be understood that your job takes up a good portion of your time, and ultimately, your life. So if you’re unhappy with your current 100K+ job (and you could still do OK living off your previous job), well, it might not be worth keeping after all.

    Different times in your life will determine what you will experience, what your family experiences were/are, how you feel about yourself, how much loss you have gone through meaning death in family/friends, pain you have experienced such as having a crisis like having cancer or watching a family member have a slow death with cancer or something similar. Your comments here are basically talking about a simple life. Life is not that simple for a lot of ppl in the world. Sometimes life will throw a curve ball at you and real struggles shape your emotional being and outlook in life. When life is simple you can always find it easy to make life choices. Life is not always simple and you find a deeper meaning of who you are when you push aside things like: more than enough money, flashy jewelry, a new car or motorcycle, a big house or a roof over your head, beautiful clothes. None of that matters! What does matter is how you treat ppl, what you think deep down in your thoughts: are they petty, harmful, angry or are they uplifting thoughts full of gratitude, love and are you grateful? Who are you? Are you superficial, someone who sways with the strongest winds or are you someone who knows what your core values are and stands by your high morals? Those are things that shape a person, not living a simple life without having to face life changing decisions. Those who have not experienced life changing decisions will never know what it’s like to dig really deep and face your inner self. At one point in life it will happen and you/they will know what I’m talking about. If it hasn’t happened yet, it will with time! Until then, enjoy the simplicity of life.

    • @JeanVoronkova

      Thanks for this note Elsie, and I agree. We often walk through life, especially in our earlier years, thinking we know who we are deep down inside, until we are severely challenged by unexpected turns in life and like you said, we have to dig deep and make hard choices. That's when through the choices we make, we create more of the person we truly are inside. The forging of the metal so to speak. In my 8 years in vietnam in my early 30s those were the most morally challenging years i faced in my life and also the years that cemented my understanding of my own values within me. It wasn't easy, and often unhappy or difficult times, but it is in those moments that we the person are born, bit by bit. Lucky are the ones who live simply and peacefully each day. I never take those for granted.

    While the self is not a static concept, I think the fundamental essence of who we are doesn't change over a lifetime, even if our priorities shift with new information. Like I have always been a writer/artist who does not have a sweet tooth, preferring salty and sour tastes. I dress pretty much the same as I did growing up and have had an interest in philosophical ideas for as long as I can remember, even if I didn't know as much. I have basically the same sense of humour, just more detailed. I used to be more comfortable being myself, but lost that due to societal pressures to conform, and I am only just finding myself again, even if it means people like me less. Maybe it's okay to not be for everyone because we're not one size fits all, and what appeals to the mass market is not particularly interesting.

    Here we go again... Blaming "society" for "expecting" things. No. It's literally nature. There isn't some intricate social structure where other species gossip about the ones not having children, yet they are still driven to reproduce. Most mammals provide for their young. You're acting like humans are just flawed in expecting these things.

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova День тому

      no I'm not. the point is that there are pockets of people who don't need those exact things you've just mentioned to be happy and therefore don't strive for them but somehow everyone acts like that's such a big problem. Actually this comment is so representative of that attitude.

    • @stevem437
      @stevem437 День тому

      @@JeanVoronkova The fact that you prioritize your happiness above literally all else is the issue. Some people can be happy just spending their entire life in front of video games and doing nothing else. It doesn’t mean it’s healthy or what’s best for them. I honestly can’t believe you are in your 40’s and still have the mentality of a teenager. You act like people only work because they want a fancy car or because they want to dine at expensive restaurants. For the majority of the world, this isn’t the case. Just because YOU were drawn to Dior bags, doesn’t mean others are. You literally didn’t even make it to age 30. Spent all that time in school and then decided you didn’t care about anything but yourself. Bali is gross by the way. Burning plastic smell. Trash all over the beaches. Young people who just want to party. Imagine going to one of the best schools in Asia (NUS) and then squandering every opportunity you’ve been given your entire life. All because you’re lazy… And trying to mask this as some sort of enlightenment. “Society, like, expects you to actually, like, do things in your life. Can you, like, believe that?” Again, every species has a biological drive to reproduce. Your lack of this drive IS abnormal and it’s good that not everyone feels this way.

    Hi Jean! I am wondering how have you been treating your emergency savings; how much do they make up your overall savings, and do you also contribute to your emergency savings each month? I feel that because it is the most vague savings, it is one we tend to neglect. Would appreciate your insights on this!

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova День тому

      Hi Rinciel, in my earlier years i had a lot more emergency savings and less assets. These days I have less emergency savings - they're about 8.3% of my net worth, in cash + easily liquidable assets. The rest are long term investments that wd be harder to liquidate in a flash. This is partly because our passive income is pretty diversified into a few different streams. There's a bit of concentration risk cos a lot of it is in real estate, but real estate also offers a lot of stability the way we do our rentals. I mention the diversification cos previously my income source is only 1, that puts my financial risk much higher hence the much bigger need for more emergency savings. I hope you understand my drift. Yes i have automated savings for the emergency savings each month when money comes in, i find that's best to prevent us accidentally spending it away!

      sometimes we create a persona to face the world as a shield for ourselves, yes. I have done the same for myself. I think that's ok if its a coping mechanism. But when finding authentic connections to others we must face others as our true selves when we are ready, otherwise it's hard to find real friends and lovers. And the point of the video is that we shd always strive to be better, and not hide behind the shield of "who we are" at one point in time to stagnate as a person.
